For as long as I have followed Awaken Online, I have always been fascinated by Bagwell's refusal to back down from the intrinsic questions of morality posed by the existence of a true virtual reality. Hellion takes all of those questions and escalates them to the next level. I could spend months pondering the questions he raised, and come no closer to an answer. Where is the moral line? Are people obligated to accept their family, no matter their actions? What are we capable of, when backed into a corner? I don't know, but it's fascinating to consider, and it's something that Bagwell faces head-on, with each book raising the stakes ever higher.Character development continues to be a strong point of Bagwell's. Following Unity, it would have been easy for him to point to Frank's growth and called it good enough. But in real life, personal growth isn't a one and done process. People have their good days and their bad, and for every two steps forward, there will be a short backslide. And Bagwell captures that perfectly as just one minor aside in a book chock full of other details. From the original trio to side characters like Silver and the hunting pack, Bagwell's characters live and breathe, growing and changing from their experiences. And for a fantasy world, I don't think there's any higher praise to be offered.As for the plot... Well all I can say is that Hellion brings everything to a new level. The battles are larger, more grand, and the schemes even more twisted. When the dust finally settles, nothing will be the same. Simply put, Hellion is the best of an already excellent series.Now, all of that isn't to say that this is a perfect book. Sure, there are some consistency issues present in the book, hardly surprising as Bagwell now has 10 books to keep in mind as he writes. For example, Jason seemed ignorant to nature of the changes Frank underwent on his solo trip, despite the video of Werewolf!Frank that went viral at the end of Unity. But ultimately, if small details like that are the worst of the issues, I certainly won't be complaining.
